در طی روند نامزدی جوایز، تمامی اعضای رای دهنده بخش موسیقی، لیستی از آثار ارسال شده به همراه موزیک ویدئو مربوطه دریافت خواهند کرد. از اعضا خواسته خواهد شد تا با تماشای ویدئوها 5 آهنگ برتر خود را در هر دسته بندی انتخاب کنند. و 5 آهنگی که در نهایت بیشترین رای را دریافت کنند برای نامزدی جایزه آکادمی معرفی می شوند. از هر فیلم حداکثر دو آهنگ برگزیده خواهد شد.
برای واجد شرایط بودن، هر آهنگ باید شامل ترانه و موسیقی باشد. که به طور مشخص برای فیلم مربوطه ساخته شده باشد. ملودی و ترانه هردو باید کاملا رسا، قابل فهم بوده و در طول فیلم مورد استفاده قرار گرفته باشد. نامزدهای انتخابی برای هشتادونهمین جایزه Oscar در روز سه شنبه، 24 ژانویه 2017 اعلام خواهند شد. و مراسم اهدای جوایز در روز یکشنبه، 26 فوریه 2017 در Dolby Theatre در هالیوود برگزار می شود. همچنین به صورت زنده از شبکه ABC ساعت 7 بعداز ظهر به وقت محلی پخش خواهد شد.
